Now that another year has passed, many people will once again find themselves hoping for some peace and relaxation following the hectic pace of the holiday season. Sadly, this is rarely the case. Indeed, many post-holiday chores come with their ownbundles of stress and frustration (anyone who's stood on line at the return counter of Toys R Us in January knows exactly what I'm talking about). And then there's the onslaught of bills for all that holiday spending. As if that wasn't enough, the current economic climate and Sept. 11 attacks have sent stress levels soaring even higher as we hope for a better tomorrow amidst the tragedies of today. The long-term effects of stress cannot be underestimated. Everyone knows it leads to headaches and irritability, but many people are blind to the dangers of prolonged stress and how it can affect the body's ability to function properly. In addition to memory loss, lowered sex drive, weight problems and fatigue, stress may contribute to cardiovascular disease, stroke, cancer, skin problems, infectious disorders, gastrointestinal problems, joint conditions, diabetes, insomnia and other complications. Therefore, it is vital that your customers understand how stress can impact their lives and what they should do about it. For most, stress and anxiety will never go away, especially now that we have been forced as a nation to brace ourselves for the possibility of future terrorist attacks. Even those who appear fine may still be deeply affected by the pressuresfrom everyday stress. This month, we will discuss relaxation strategies you can suggest to consumers, as well as nutritional tips and other relief aids you can offer to help them improve their well-being.
