For decades, if you needed buoyancy for a pipelaying operation you would probably have either welded old oil drums or fabricated enclosed steel cylinders to do the job for you. However, the drawback of using steel is that it is incredibly heavy and difficult to transport, handle and deploy - and will rapidly deteriorate between jobs. Whilst steel is still being used by some today, the market is now moving towards lower maintenance, mote user-friendly technologies.
