Given that the state of Alaska does not permit salmon-farming as such, scientists there haven't experimented in the cross-breeding or hybridization of Pacific salmon species for many years. However, Dr. Anthony Gharrett, a professor at the Universityof Alaska (Fairbanks) confirmed that research is still ongoing into the concern that if two disparate stocks of salmon within a species are cross-bred, there may be a reduction in the fitness or survivability of the resulting stock in its second generation.
