NEW TECHNOLOGY DURING CONSTRUCTION OF THE GHATKOPAR HIGH LEVEL TUNNEL

Mumbai (Bombay) is a city of opposites. Modern office buildings and luxurious apartment blocks are as real as the extreme poverty in the slums. In the past decades the city has grown immensely due to the large migration of the country people towards the city. Currently, nearly half of the 12 million people in Mumbai are either living in slums or are homeless. They cover about 6 percent of the city area and have for the most part no access to fresh water or sewage facilities. Mumbai produces 2,225 million litres of sewage per day, which is diverted into the Arabic Sea-mostly untreated. This situation is to be improved with the help of a major sewer development project, which is supported by the World Bank.
