The recent confirmation that Rowan has ordered two 12,000ft-rated drillships at Hyundai Heavy Industries joins a series of such announcements made since the beginning of the year. To cite just a few examples, Diamond Offshore has exercised its option for a third ultra-deepwater (rated water depth >7,500ft) drillship, which followed the earlier announcement of Odfjell Drilling's joint venture for two ultra-deepwater drillships. This is along with attempting to keep abreast of all the recent Petrobras/Sete Brasil newbuilding activity.
