Few outsiders likely appreciate just how broad the collaboration between Nissan Motor Co. Ltd. and Renault SA is becoming. In an exclusive interview with Ward's, Yo Usuba, Nissan's senior vice president-powertrain development, talks about how the division in designing and engineering new engines and transmissions is benefiting both auto makers. Among Nissan's current lineup, Usuba says two of Nissan's six primary gasoline engine series, the HR and MR, as well as one of four diesels, the new M9R, were co-developed. But the mix will change, he says, noting the award-winning VQ V-6 gasoline engine is a Nissan original.
