Beneficial fungi and natural yeasts help control postharvest mold and rot. NEW weapons are now available in the war against devastating post-harvest fruit rots. But unlike most postharvest fungicides, these weapons originated in nature, not in a chemistry lab. Candida oleophila, a yeast, and Pseudomonas syringae, a bacterium, can be applied to fruit going into storage or fruit that is being packed. Registered on apples, pears, and citrus, these beneficial microorganisms help control a variety of destructive molds and fruit rots.
