GROWERS of most tree fruits are eligible for Catastrophic Insurance Coverage (CAT) under the Federal Crop Insurance program that will at least cut the losses in case of a natural disaster such as a flood, drought, or hail storm. The only problem is, you must sign up in advance by mandated reporting deadlines, which vary by state. Catastrophic coverage will pay for crop yield losses greater than 50% at a rate of 60% of the expected market price based on the farm's production records for four or more years. While that level of compensation won't put you on Easy Street, it helps to cover some basic costs. Coverage is provided for a processing fee of just $50 per crop per county, with a $600 limit per grower.
