DURING a week this past May when some unseasonably warm weather descended on the Golden State, five farm labor contractors were shut down for violating California's Division of Occupational Safety and Health's (OSHA) heat illness policies, which are designed to safeguard employees. "This year we have increased our effort to raise awareness of the importance of heat illness prevention," said the state's Department of Industrial Relations chief, John C. Duncan. "We have now trained more than 4,000 agricultural employers across the state and have increased our enforcement even more than the unprecedented levels from last year."
