Aquaculture chickens, salmon -- a case study

To explain their vision of what aquaculture can achieve aquaculturists often cite the success of the poultry industry. The analogy is compelling because the development of chicken farming is an amazing success story and there are significant parallels with some types of aquaculture. But there are also important differences and these must be understood if its lessons are to be applied intelligently. As the world's salmon farmers grapple with marketing challenges created by their extraordinary farming success, it seems appropriate to examine the poultry comparison more deeply and to ask: could salmon, or some other fanned fish, ever really emulate the chicken as a mass market source of animal protein?
