'Nobody really knows how many finisher places we need... but we know we are all looking'

Growing retailer demand for British pork is putting the pig industry's infrastructure under pressure. Increasingly leading supermarkets are insisting their highest-quality pork must come from outdoor-bred British pigs. As a result producers all over the country are keen to expand their herds. This has created a serious bottleneck in the finishing sector. 'Nobody really knows how many finisher places we need in England but we know we are all looking for places, mostly straw-based,' said Jim Burling, of Bowes of Norfolk.
