Precise is nice: a new absolute diameter measurement system for fine wires, enamelled wires and plastic thread

The diameter of a thin wire can be measured by different technologies. The most widely used methods are weighing, Abbe length comparator, micrography, laser scanning and laser-interferometry. However, the different methods do not producecomparable data for diameters smaller than 0.2mm. The lack of such reliable data causes many problems on the market between the producers and users of wire, fibre and thread. The reason for the uncertainties is the lack of an absolute measurement systemand certified reference material for the calibration of the instruments. The company KJM now presents such a system.
