More than a few UK mushroom growers have begun their lives on farms and Trevor is one of them. His father and his uncle were in partnership on a family mixed-farm a few miles South-West of Thirsk in North Yorkshire and this is where Trevor was born and brought up. Beef cattle, cereal, sugar beet and potatoes were the main crops and from an early age he was involved in the farm's activities. Working with the farm machinery was Trevor's main interest and he well-remembers driving tractors when around 11 years old. This did not adversely affect his school work, because he had no trouble passing his 'O' levels examinations. With this success under his belt he went back to working full-time on the family farm for a year. The next step in his career was to Askham Bryan Agricultural College near York around twenty miles or so to the south of his home.
