摘要

Showing great enterprise, Chris's father, a joiner by trade, bought a brick building which his boss had been intending to purchase. For this show of initiative he was rewarded by being fired. Undeterred, his father dismantled the building brick by brick and re-erected it on his own patch of land using it, at first, for pig rearing. An early memory for Chris is going out to this building with his mother to inject the pigs. It didn't do any good, though, the pigs died. Chris remembers them being buried. Chickens followed the pigs, but eventually his dad decided that growing mushrooms would give a quicker cash return than keeping animals. The first crops of mushrooms were grown on ridge beds on the floor of the rebuilt brick building.
