THE MK 4 Golf is not the only Volkswagen where replacing a blown headlamp bulb is not as straightforward as it might be, the Beetle also requires a novel approach. Not unlike the older models, where you had to unscrew the headlamp assembly and lift it clear of the wing before unclipping the old bulb from the back of the headlamp unit, with the new Beetle you also need to remove the headlamp assemblies from the car. The difference is that it is detached from the inside, after opening the bonnet Actually, it is not such a difficult job, when you know exactly how to go about it In fact when the lamps have been removed once and suitably lubricated, they are much easier to remove thereafter and it should then take only about 10 minutes to remove and replace both headlamps. I have even done it on the Eurotunnel train, when needing to reverse-dip the headlamps for a trip to the continent.
