THE VOLKSWAGEN Group has a variety of injection systems for its diesel engines, but only two types are being used for the latest generation. Common rail is reserved for all the engines with 6 or 8 cylinders, while unit injectors are fitted to the four- and five-cylinder engines. The reason for this choice is largely one of packaging: fitting unit pump injectors to multi-cylinder engines takes up a lot of space.
