2.0 TDI: Paul Harris details the technicalities of the 140 PS 2.0-litre 16-valve TDI engine

NOW USED in the Mk 5 Golf, Touran, and the new Golf Plus and Passat, as well as the Audi A3, A4 and A6, the 2.0 TDI is a development of the long-established 1.9 TDI. The most apparent difference, apart from the small increase in capacity, from 1896 cc to 1968 cc, achieved by increasing the bore from 79.5 to 81.0 mm, is the introduction of two inlet and exhaust valves for each cylinder instead of one of each. As a result, the gas flow is improved and the engine develops 140 PS (103 kW) at 4000 rpm.
