WHEN THE Volkswagen Group first introduced its direct injection FSI petrol engines, the emphasis was on improved fuel consumption and cleaner exhaust gases. Low emissions are now an absolute necessity if an engine is to be accepted internationally, and any means of improving fuel consumption is welcome. The improved fuel efficiency of FSI engines came about because, at low engine speeds, the small amount of petrol injected into the cylinder is surrounded by a cushion of air, allowing it to burn very efficiently, and insulating it from the cylinder walls. The key phrase here is low engine speeds; at higher speeds combustion is the same as in any other petrol engine and there is no major improvement in fuel consumption.
