When a 'Sunday Times' journalist posed as a businessman and two M.P.s acepted ￡1,000 payments - in return for tabling his questions to Ministers - the parliamentary debate that followed ws peppered with heated remarks. What had happened was described as "a violation of freedom, not a protection of it". The newspaper was accused of entrapping M.P.s and it was alleged that "deception and trickery were tools of a totalitarian state".
