Transmission developments - do they match the technology advances in engines?

What contributions have transmission builders made to fuel economy and the environment? With the heavy road transport industries of Europe moving to Euro 6 emissions technology by the end of next year and in North America to Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) 2010 emissions standards last year, emphasis is naturally on the engines powering the vehicles involved. The need for transmission technology to match that of the primary power unit seems to have taken a back seat in terms, at least, of publicity. Yet it has been vital and continues to be so that the transmission keeps pace and matches the needs of the new engine technology. In this feature, Future Fuels & Power examines what has been happening in this area.
