Half a century has passed since former British Railways chairman Richard Beeching recommended that great swathes of the rail network be closed. But some key routes are to be reopened. Momentum is gathering to reopen a railway route towards one of Britain's largest towns without a train station, 50 years after the Beeching rail closure report led to the line's demise.
