Improving resilience planning to help cope with unforeseen events

Smarter and better coordinated approaches are needed to manage the risk to transport networks posed by dramatic events such as heavy weather. Resilience of our transportation networks and the 'ability to plan, cope and recover' during a natural or man made crisis have always been challenges facing policy makers, engineers and others who respond. The reliability and resilience of the UK's transport network is, as we know, fundamental to the economic, social and well being of communities. But natural weather and climate related disasters are also becoming more unpredictable and costly. So can we accept what we know and don't know?
