Launch of a park and ride network management guidance note by CIHT will give those responsible for introducing schemes a good overview of factors they must consider, say Roger Elphick and Dave Wafer. It is essential that all city and town centres have a parking strategy which deals effectively with the demands for long and short stay visits. The economic viability of most centres is dependent upon the provision of convenient and attractive access arrangements for business, shopping and tourist visits by both car and public transport. Almost all town centres are unlikely to have sufficient capacity to be able to cater adequately for both long and short stay visits by car. Failure to provide attractive and convenient access arrangements increases the attractiveness of out of town office and retail developments, potentially further eroding the viability of our most sustainable locations in urban areas. Introducing a park and ride scheme can help to ensure that an urban area remains accessible and attractive for those arriving by car. This winter CIHT publishes a Park & Ride Network Management guidance note, which builds on the Park & Ride Network Management Note, published in 2001. Since then considerable experience has been gained in both the development and operation of park and ride facilities.
