Green light for SCOOT trials to help pedestrians cross the road: Could safety of pedestrians in London be enhanced using new technology installed at crossings

Transport for London (TfL) is poised to launch trials of new intelligent pedestrian crossing technology this summer, which it says will improve travel efficiency and safety for walkers in the capital. Known as Pedestrian SCOOT (Split Cycle Offset Optimisation Technique) it involves video camera technology that can automatically detect how many pedestrians are waiting at a crossing and adjust traffic signal timings accordingly. This means when large numbers of pedestrians are waiting at a crossing the green man invitation to cross phase will be automatically extended, increasing the priority level of the pedestrian mode of transport by allowing more people to cross the road.
