Dublin takes cycling to its heart: Dublin like many urban centres has seen a resurgence in use of the bicycle in the city over the last decade

Between 2004 and 2013 there has been an increase of over 100% in the number of cyclists entering central Dublin during the morning peak. Annual growth rates of over 10% are currently being recorded on many parts of the cycle network with no indication of this flattening out anytime soon. So what has changed in Dublin? Has investment in infrastructure resulted in this growth or would it have occurred anyway? Dublin has an extensive network of cycle routes, mainly built over 10 years ago. During their introduction cycle volumes continued to decline in die city, reaching a low point in 2004. Introduction of this infrastructure alone is unlikely to have generated recent growth.
