Britain's second city lights the way

Optimally designed arrays of remotely monitored LEDs linked to traffic control systems are allowing Birmingham to claim development of the world's most sophisticated street lighting. Every new street light in Birmingham is being installed to give the optimum balance of energy and luminance appropriate to its particular position. Even the direction and area of light from each lamp is being individually designed, such is the sophistication of Birmingham's new lighting. The city is currently getting a lot of new street lights and lighting technology thanks to the city council's privately financed 'Birmingham Highways & Maintenance' contract. Over a period of five years, starting in June 2010 and with ￡80M of investment from concessionaire Amey, streets in all of Birmingham's 40 electoral wards are being given an uplift with new carriageway and footway surfacing, street furniture and lighting.
