Managing and Regulating Red Light Districts in British Cities

Street prostitution has traditionally been found in the majority of large towns and cities and while it has often been a low priority for both the police and local authorities it is now attracting more high profile attention as are the rights of prostitutes and the views of residents in those areas where it occurs. The introduction of tolerance zones is seen as one way of managing the interests of a number of different stakeholders, but, as yet, political and professional support for designating such zones is limited. However, at a time when ACPO argue that 'the policing of prostitution currently operates in a national policy vacuum' the debate has some way to run.
