Twenty five years ago this month Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher officially opened the M25 London orbital motorway, the world's longest single city bypass. Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher spoke passionately at the M25's opening ceremony to remind everyone of the absolute necessity for an orbital route around London. She then cut the ribbon to allow traffic on to the Micklefield to South Mimms section of the motorway (junctions 19 to 23 - the last stretch of M25 to be built) and thereby complete the 188km (117 mile) long circle. The date was 29 October 1986.
