The objective of the present study was to examine the histopathological lesion development in the different organs (bursa of Fabricius, caecal tonsils, spleen, liver, kidneys, pancreas, large and small intestines, proventriculus, lungs, heart, trachea, oesophagus, brain and cerebellum) of 1-day-old chick intramuscularly infected with the chicken anemia virus (CAV) and to detect the antigen density using streptavidin-biotin immuno-peroxidase staining technique. 71 SPF white Leghorn chicks, 1-day-old, from the Manisa Poultry Diseases Research Institute were used in this study. 52 chicks were injected intramuscularly with 0.5 ml TCID50:100,000 CAVs (Cux-1 strain) at day 1, while the remaining 19 chicks kept in a separate facility served as the control. Sampling occurred on the days defined by the experimental study protocol. Bursa of Fabricius, caecal tonsils, spleen, liver, kidneys, pancreas, large and small intestines, proventriculus, lungs, heart, trachea, oesophagus, brain and cerebellum were collected from the birds. The samples were fixed in 10% buffered formalin solution. Results revealed that there were no significant microscopic lesions found in the bursa of Fabricius, spleen, lung, intestine, caecal tonsils, and glandular stomach after day 7 of inoculation, despite the positive antigenic-specific stains in the organs. It is suggested that histopathological lesions are not observed in the examined organs other than in the thymus gland and bone marrow.
