Hard to believe it but the stump grinder is more or less celebrating a golden anniversary. It was back in the mid '50s when stumpers went from a farm-built, tractor-powered prototype into mainstream production, and thus was the birth of a new part ofour industry. Over the years what began as a rotating wheel fitted with, essentially, metal bits used for mining minerals such as coal has evolved into a sophisticated, highly engineered technology largely transparent to the user who only wants to know if the equipment works and what it will cost. Technically, all stump grinders are a function of optimizing four things: the wheel, speed of rotation, horsepower and the number of cutting teeth. So, after 50 years, what's to be expected when it comes to the business end - the tooth area?
