It was one of those days when a plan came together naturally. My father, who lives on the NSW north coast, and my uncle from Aotearoa (New Zealand), visited me recently at my home base of Port Stephens for a day's fishing. With a perfect summer weather forecast of 5-10 knots and sunny skies, I thought this was an ideal time to get amongst some of local pelagic and bottom fish, and to mix things up bit on the inshore reefs and close to the headlands. After launching my little Haines centre console boat and approaching the entrance to the heads, we were greeted with a school of rippling fish on the surface. Fortunately, I had already rigged a spin rod with a small metal, and Pete grabbed therod and fired a cast into the school. He hooked almost immediately and I initially thought the fish were salmon. However, a large, silver, sea run mullet was swung over the side of the boat -with the treble in its mouth!
