China's Tobacco Applies GAP Model

The good agricultural practice (GAP) model is gradually infiltrating the tobacco growing sector in China. This article studies the trend of tobacco production in China by introducing the application of the GAP model in Shisyng County in Qtying City —a major tobacco-growing region in southwest China's Yunnan Province. In 2004, Dimon International Tobacco Co., Ltd. invested in establishing a 6,800-mu (453-hectate) export-oriented exclusive high-quality tobacco growing base. It has since applied the GAP model in managing leaf tobacco production at the base, which is generally adopted in agricultural production in developed countries. The application of the GAP model is intended to control the various factors negatively affecting leaf tobacco quality, regulate all processes of leaf tobacco production and attain the goals of safety, effectiveness, stability of output, stability of quality and controllability.
