Some manufacturers call for brake fluid replacement every two years while others don't specify.Yes,the service interval for flushing brake fluid has been a controversial subject.It shouldn't be.About 10 years ago,the National Institute for Standards and Technology(NIST)studied brake fluid for NHTSA.NIST found that as brake fluid deteriorates,the presence of copper ions(from the plating inside steel tubing)can be detected by paper-strip testing.That copper,NIST concluded,indicates the fluid has broken down to the point it should be replaced,because it's potentially causing damage to the hydraulic system.
