ON TRACK College prof promoting better health, safer race environment for drivers, pit crews

BIDDEFORD, Maine—Better buckle up—college professor Lara Carlson is taking the ride of her life and wants everyone on board. Ms. Carlson, whose love for NASCAR is infectious, has found a way to integrate that love of racing with research associated with her work as an assistant professor in the applied exercise sciences program at University of New England's Westbrook College of Health Sciences. Since being appointed to the 10-member American College of Sports Medicine Mo-torsports Committee—she is a past president of that college— she has had the opportunity to apply her professional expertise to improve performance and safety for the racing communi- ty—and that includes drivers, crews and even fans.
