Changes in haematological parameters depending on the training status in Siberian Huskies.

In the assessment of haematologic findings, breed-specific specialties must be considered. The purpose of this study was to investigate the changes in the blood cell count of sled dogs as a result of training. Blood samples were collected from 15 active Siberian Huskies before and after the training and race season. The haematologic parameters were analysed using the ADVIA 120 system. White blood cell count, mean corpuscular haemoglobin and mean volume of the erythrocytes showed no significant changes dependent on the training condition. In contrast, red blood cell count, haemoglobin and haematocrit increased significantly. In some cases, haematocrit and red blood cell count were above the laboratory reference range but without presence of a disease. In addition, an increase in platelet count was registered. The increase in haematocrit in active sled dogs can be seen as a result of physical training. Therefore, the condition of the dog must be considered when interpreting blood results of sled dogs.
