Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!" These were the presi- dency-defining words uttered in 1987 by President Ronald Reagan at the Berlin Wall in West Berlin, adjacent to the Brandenburg Gate. The amplification system was positioned so it could also be heard on the Eastern (Communist-controlled) side of the wall. On the austere East German side a young 24-year-old filmmaker, Andreas Dresen, heard those monumental words.
