The Mapungubwe human remains are important not onlybecause they represent an ancestral linkage to the archaeologicalsites, but also because they are perceived as a high-profileexample of the need for the transformation of colonial andapartheid era scientific practice. These Mapungubwe humanremains have come to embody the 'stealing' and 'looting' ofancestral remains by 'Western scientists' in the minds of manySouth Africans.
