A commercial anti-bovine herpesvirus type 1 (BHV-1)GE blocking ELISA test kit which is used to differentiate between cattle immunized with gE deleted BHV-1 marker vaccines and naturally BHV-1 infected cattle was investigated. When 126 serum samples(from unvaccinated cattle in France), which were positive for BHV-1 antibodies by the 24 h virus neutralisation test (VNT), were tested, most of the samples with titres lower than 32 were negative for gE antibodies. The relative sensitivity of the gE ELISA kit was 74% which is lower than the 100% sensitivity shown in previous studies. The results suggest that the gE blocking ELISA test would miss a significant number of infectious bovine rhinotracheitis-positive reactors and the sensitivity of the testshould be increased if it is to be suitable for use with gE deleted vaccines.
