PCPC Science Chief Approaches Public Safety Perceptions With 'Real People' Experience

Dr. Beth Lange, the Personal Care Products Council's third chief scientist within the last three years, inherits an ongoing challenge for the trade group-championing sound science at a time when public opinion regarding cosmetic safety issues is colored largely by emotion and misinformation. Formerly Chief Scientific Officer at Mary Kay, where she headed the direct seller's global research and development program, overseeing product development as well as consumer safety, environmental stewardship and regulatory affairs, Lange assumed the science lead at PCPC in July following the retirement of Halyna Breslawec April 30. Breslawec joined the trade association in summer 2011 upon the retirement of John Bailey, who held the chief scientist position for five years before taking his expertise to EAS Consulting. Both Bailey and Breslawec came to PCPC with an FDA background. Bailey directed the agency's cosmetics office for nearly a decade, and Breslawec served more than 14 years in leadership positions within FDA's medical-devices division and as a pharmacologist in the Office of the Commissioner.
