FDA appears spared from some of the immediate effects of the long-feared sequester, namely furloughs, but the across-the-board cuts will nevertheless deal a blow to the agency's staffing that may be felt for some time. A last-minute meeting between President Obama and congressional leaders did not produce a deal to avert the $85 billion in spending cuts imposed by the Budget Control Act of 2011, allowing them to take effect March 1.
