If you had gone shopping for a new car in 1956 or so, you would have had an easier time making a choice than you would today. The Big Three dominated the U.S. auto industry, and they captured economies of scale by making large numbers of just a few models. If Henry Ford had been alive in 1956, he probably would have said, "Any customer can have any size tail fins he wants, so long as they're big," or perhaps, "Any customer can have any amount of chrome he wants, so long as it's a lot."
