DANISH companies Danisco and Novozymes have announced major breakthroughs in enzymes for the production of cellulosic ethanol. Both companies say their improved enzymes could lead to the commercial development of cellulosic biofuels, which are at present prohibitively expensive. Danisco's subsidiary Genencor and Novozymes launched their new enzymes at the 15th Annual National Ethanol Conference in Florida. Both enzymes are involved in breaking down cellulose into its component simple sugars, a crucial part of the production of ethanol from non-food feedstocks.
