The Shorter Oxford Dictionary (2002)defines excellence as 'the possession of good qualities or abilities to aneminent or unusual degree'. High qualityin most forms of human endeavourdepends on five main factors: I Human excellence (the subject of thisarticle) comprising greatly enhancedskills, knowledge and experience inparticular domains valued by society; I Procedures and systems in place thatencourage excellence and discouragebad practice; I Exemplary standards of materials,resources and environments providinga context where high-qualityperformance can flourish; I The existence of a range of strongconnections to other people ofexcellence and other centres ofexcellence; I Equipment that both enhanceseffective and efficient performance,and whose design makes it unlikelythat major malfunction or operatorerror will occur.
