Thompson cautions that their new study does not prove that finasteride does not cause high-grade disease, but that high-grade disease was seen only in men whose biopsies were prompted by the presence of increased PSA or digital rectal examination. Men on long-term finasteride treatment also did not have increased high-grade cancer, which would be expected of a drug that boosted carcinogenesis.
