The economic crisis has made the drive towards personalised medicine, where treatment is directed at those patients who will most benefit, even stronger. Today personalised medicine, on a molecular basis, has a clinical role in selecting targeted therapies in which the presence of a functional target is a prerequisite for a good treatment response. However, for many cancer types there now exist strong molecular biomarkers or signatures with the power to predict the individual disease course at levels that can be clinical useful.
