摘要

While memorizing anatomy and learning how to perform certain medical procedures is vital in training prospective physicians, it is equally, if not more, important to prepare them for humanism in medicine. In 2011, 69 medical schools of the 133 accredited in the United States (52 percent) required a course in medical humanities. It is through the window of humanity that one learns the art of medicine: The obligation to care for the sick may not wholly be interpreted as the ability to cure, but the desire to heal should stem fundamentally from the ability to provide compassionate care.
