New LDL-lowering drug approved

The FDA approved alirocumab (Praluent) for lowering low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C).The drug is indicated for patients with heterozygous familial hypercholes-terolemia (HeFH) or those at high cardiovascular risk who cannot lower their LDL-C with HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors (statins). It is approved for use in addition to diet and maximally-tolerated statin therapy in adults with HeFH or adults with clinical atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease who require additional lowering of LDL-C. Alirocumab is administered by subcutaneous injection.
