Needle magnet for prevention of sharps injury to operating room personnel.

Surgeons and healthcare workers have a high risk of exposure to bloodborne pathogens, mainly through percutaneous or mucocutaneous routes. Percutaneous exposure is usually caused by needle-sticks or cuts from sharp instruments contaminated with the blood of infected patients.Operating room personnel reported 6.4 blood and body fluid exposures per 1000 surgical procedures. Increase in estimated blood loss, increased number of personnel working in the surgical field, and longer duration of the surgical procedure were associated with a higher risk of exposure. Suture needle-related exposures have a stronger association with the above factors.Some policies have been proposed for reducing sharps injuries during surgery. These include the use of blunted suture needles for internal suturing of fascia and muscle, hands-free techniques, double-glove wearing during surgery, and prohibition of human immunodeficiency virus- and hepatitis B virus-infected surgeons from invasive procedures with a resultant increased risk of exposure.
