摘要

"A map of the world without Utopia on it is not worth glancing at". Oscar Wilde About 500 years ago Thomas More wrote "Utopia". In this 16th century bestseller, More described the political, legal and social conditions for a world worth living in. In his Utopia, "... the living do not incur any debts on the future ... nor do they waste resources of those yet to be born." An early idea of sustainability was later framed in the famous 1987 Brundt-land Report, "Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs" [1]. Although all Utopias have described the desired world as a fair and sustainable one, we have still not made any progress towards such a desired world. The developed and the rapidly developing nations heavily compromise the chances - even sheer survival - of future generations. Europe is no exception. There is no such thing as a "sustainable Europe". Not as long as the planet as a whole is not managed in a sustainable way.
