Peaceable Kingdom: Woodstock is revived permanently in a new entertainment venue

Bethel Woods Museum is part of the greater Bethel Woods Center for the Arts that sprawls across old Yasgur's Farm in upstate New York, site of the fabled Woodstock festival of 1969. Alan Gerry, an entrepreneur and former CEO of Cablevision Industries, bought the 1,700-acre site in 1996 planning to turn it into a vast entertainment complex that would help revive the ailing economy of Sullivan County. The museum itself, which opened to the public in June, is housed in two pavilions with copper-clad roofs, cupolas, and foundations made from local stone. (Both the concert venue and the museum were designed by Paul E. Westlake, Jr., of Cleveland-based Westlake Reed Leskosky. An early proposal by Richard Meier was rejected as being too modern.) While the exterior architecture seems oddly retro, the permanent exhibition, designed by Bethesda, Maryland-based Gallagher & Associates, creates a teasingly trippy time warp back to the tie-dyed past.
